HOW MUCH SCREEN TIME IS TOO MUCH FOR YOUR KIDS?
In the year 2020, we experienced something which we’ve never done before. Everything was shut down and there wasn’t much to do. And all of this led to our only source of escape from reality and that’s our cell phones, tabs, laptops, and TV. In short, our screen time increased. But, have you ever wondered, How much screen time is too much?
In the US, children in the age group of 8–12 years spend around 4–6 hours per day in front of the screens whereas teens spend up to 9 hours per day. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1189217/us-parents-screen-time-children-coronavirus/
It’s not that all screen time is bad, but you need to differentiate between good and bad screens. Babies and toddlers are the most vulnerable because most of the baby’s brain development occurs in the first few years of life. Hence, it’s important for them that they explore the world around them. Therefore, “the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting the screen time to 2 hours per day.”

2.Violence
3.Lack of interest in academics
4.Obesity
5.Sleep disturbances
6.Myopia
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD SCREENS?
Not all screen time is bad. For example, when your baby is watching a good quality educational program or playing an informative game, that is not considered bad screen time.
WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOUR KIDS?
- Talk to them and explain to them the difference between a good and a bad screen and its risks.
- Educate them about the negative aspect of social media such as cyberbullying, predators, negative stereotypes, etc.
- During meals and family gatherings, don’t use any gadgets.
- Don’t allow screens at bedtime.
CONCLUSION
When you police your kid’s internet use, there’s a high chance that you’ll make them rebellious. They’ll start lying and even mistrusting you. In contrast, if you educate your kids about the benefits of good screen time and the dangers of bad screens, then they may amaze you in ways you never imagined. So, instead of imposing these screen time restrictions on your kids, make them understand and let themselves implement these rules in their lives.
